“Greg Howard is a natural when it comes to talking to students about his writing process and his books. His presentation is fun and engaging and includes time for students to ask questions. We look forward to having him return to our school!”

“Having Greg Howard visit our school, Ooltewah Middle School, was one of the most powerful days I've been a part of as an educator. Greg spoke to four different groups of students--reaching nearly all 300 of our 6th graders--about The Whispers, but, more importantly, about how each and every one of us has "a story" and how sharing our story leads to a more empathetic world. The most meaningful part of the day, however, was when we facilitated a writing workshop for 30 selected students. Greg worked with students on developing their own writing territories and imparting their own voice into their writing. Students shared their quick writes and it was obvious that they were deeply influenced and inspired by Greg's writing as well as his willingness to share his authentic self with students. The experience brought about laughter, tears, and it will surely be imprinted on the minds of many participants.”

“Greg brings a passion and energy into the classroom that I envy. He engaged with my students and provided answers to some rather pointed questions. Initially, I had some concerns because I knew the subject matter made some of the students feel uneasy, as if there were only certain questions that should be asked. However, Greg’s natural ability in front of an audience provided the students with a proper sense of community. Even though Greg’s visit was last semester, I still have students asking if East Carolina will bring him back after his next publication.”

Student Comments of East Carolina University Two Day Visit

“Having Greg Howard come into our class to talk about his book was an amazing and inspiring day for me personally. When Greg was talking about how he wrote this story largely based on his own personal life, it stuck out to me immensely, and I think it stuck out with other students as well. It will be something that I will want to incorporate in my classroom one day.”

“Having Greg talk to our class about his book made the book feel more important. Being able to attend his discussion session on that Sunday helped me to realize that he is an actual person. Before meeting him, I imagined that authors were overbearing and rude. But Greg changed the way I think at authors now.”

“Having Greg Howard come and talk in person really allowed to ask tough and personal questions that opened up many aspects of the book that related back to his own life growing up in the south and losing a parent just like Riley.”

“I am so glad that we were able to meet Greg and hear his story. It helped me see the story through his eyes and how he wanted to affect a community.”

“This was a neat experience for me as it was my first time listening to and meeting an author. I became interested in Greg’s own childhood story and how he incorporated it in his book through the different characters and events.”

“After talking with Greg, I learned that writing literature is more about sharing a story and the interpretations are done individually by the reader. This unique experience will now change the way I view authors and has challenged me to read literature with a more open mind.”

“This experience ended up being my favorite part of the course because we had questions that got answered and that is usually not how life goes. We had direct answers from the source of the book and that was so comforting knowing that we had exact responses. The rest of my English courses that I will take here will never give me an astounding opportunity like this one has.”
